Defining Moments That Shape Our Life

Michael Yacoub News   •   June 2, 2016

There are defining moments in every person’s life. Most of us have on average ten defining moments…moments that have gone on to shape who we are and the choices we make. They can be fabulous events that we treasure and have been a source of joy for us throughout our lives. They also can be painful experiences that we have tried hard to forget, minimize or run away from. These defining moments stand out in our memory like a bright flicker in the deep corners of our lives shaping our thinking and moulding our experiences. We tell ourselves narratives about what these moments mean to us. We give ourselves an interpretation of the events based on our experiences, values and beliefs

When you look back at your life, you no doubt would be surprised how many defining moments you carry with you. These moments impacted your values and beliefs and steered you throughout your life’s journey and defined your personalities, and your outlook of life.

Take a moment to think about and recall a defining moment in your life, like an incident, experience or an action that had huge impact on your values and beliefs. For instance, a defining moment might be a partnership breakup, meeting your soul partner or a moment when you made a life-changing decision.

If the defining moment is an unpleasant one you would definitely want to get rid of it or replace it with a pleasant one. To do that, you should embrace a transformational exercise either on your own or with the help of a life coach. Try the following approach and record all the details as noted…remember, if your life is worth living it’s worth documenting!

The first step towards creating that transformation is by conquering your beliefs to obtain total self-awareness. Start your transformation by following these steps:

  • Identify a defining moment in your life

  • Write down how old you were, and where you were?

  • Record what happened, who was there, what was said?

  • What did you tell yourself in that moment?

  • What beliefs did you carry forward from that one defining moment?

  • What you would tell yourself today as a consequence of the beliefs you’ve held onto since then?

  • Write down the price you are paying for these beliefs.. What consequences are feeling in your life right now because of beliefs you’ve created in the past?

  • What price will you continue to pay over the coming years if you keep these beliefs?

If the answer is no, then what would work for you better? Create new beliefs that are in alignment with who you want to be. Choose new beliefs that will serve you better and nurture your life’s journey, but above all choose beliefs that will challenge you.

Ask yourself this: What price would I pay if I don’t reinforce these new beliefs right NOW?
